Derrick worker who suffered brain injury in fall gets $10.7 million

A jury awarded $10.7 million to a derrick hand who sustained a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures throughout his body when an oil rig mast collapsed and he fell 80 feet. In 2009, Brady Foret, then 23, was working on a rig in Louisiana. Foret blamed Stewart & Stevenson, which refurbished the rig several months before his accident. He claimed that the company didn't use enough safety pins in the rig's 112-foot Wilson mast, which led to the collapse. Foret fractured his jaw, nearly all his ribs and several thoracic vertebrae. He also tore a rotator cuff and a knee ligament. His brain injury has left him with a severe short-term memory problem and an inability to work and function as a normal adult, his counsel argued.
