$14.4 million wrongful death verdict awarded to three boys whose parents were killed in a car accident by a tire defect

A jury has issued a verdict recommending that a car dealership pay $14.4 million to the three young children of Casey and Melanie Barber following the couple's wrongful death.

In 2006, Casey and Melanie Barber were driving a Ford E350 Sportsmobile on the freeway when a right-rear tire tread separation caused Casey to lose control of his car. This resulted in a rollover crash killing the couple. Their three sons were of ages 3, 5, and 8 at the time.

The plaintiff's attorney contended that the dealership Mossy Ford performed a faulty tire repair on the van prior the accident. The attorney said that he had proved at trial that instead of attempting to repair a tire damaged so severely, the dealership should have taken the tire out of service.

As a condition of the post-verdict settlement, Mossy Ford has consented to immediately begin following industry guidelines regarding tire repair practices, and they will begin to implement a new training program that will give technicians better training about safe tire repair; thus, improving consumer safety.
